With online school being the new normal this fall, students have been adjusting to their new schedules. There are 15 minute breaks in between classes that serve as a passing periods. Students use this time to use the restroom, get a snack, or quickly finish work before the next period starts.
“I think it might be helpful for longer breaks because having students sit on a computer for two hours or more consecutively can cause headaches,” said junior Lili Figueroa.
Figueroa says that she grabs a snack or watches a little bit of a show during break. She is currently watching shows like Vampire Diaries, The Crown and Cobra Kai.
Some students may use these breaks to ease the brain and take their eyes away from their screens, others use the time to catch up on assignments or work that needs to be turned in.
“There’s not enough time to finish homework,” senior Sonia Randall said. “It would be helpful to have longer breaks so that I can have more time to finish work and not be stressed to have to hurry up to do my work late in the day.”
Others are super scholars who can multitask their way through breaks and find the time to play a quick round of a game like 2K or Call of Duty.
“I find it helpful that we have longer breaks than the regular 5 minute intervals. It gives us time to prepare for my next class and grab a bite to eat, so it’s a win-win situation for me,” junior Jason Arreloa said. “If I have extra time, I like to play video games to pass time.”
Out of the 10 students interviewed, 80% said that they use their breaks for getting a quick breather.
Breaks are highly essential in order to be able to function in any working school day to prevent people from burning out. Without breaks it would be tough on students because of staring at a screen from the moment they wake up till the afternoon.
According to Edutopia “Our brains aren’t idle when we take breaks, they’re hard at work processing memories and helping us make sense of what we had just experienced.” This would be during that learning period. Breaks are not just used for essential necessities and or pleasure but for the information that was learned to be organized in the mind and processed since not all brains work alike.
