After months of isolation, seniors at Encinal High School will finally get to gather for a Class of 2021 event. On June 3, students will flock to Lake Chalet in Oakland for their senior banquet. The dinner, which replaces prom, will allow seniors to celebrate their final year of high school.

“I’m excited to even be having a banquet,” said Cecily West. “and I’d say I’m just hyped to have some sort of senior event."

For many students, this will be the first time they’ve seen each other in person in over a year.

“It's a little weird, not because I think it’ll be unsafe, but just because it has been so long since we had a formal event with the entire class,” said class president Leah Fikermariam. “I think we are taking as many precautions as possible to make things safe, including getting everyone tested beforehand, having outdoor seating, and letting students choose who they want to sit with.”

All students in attendance will need to present a negative COVID test.

“I think it will run smoothly as long as people are respectful to one another,” said Fikermariam. “We will also have students and staff to enforce that people follow guidelines, so I’m not worried.”

Lake Chalet was voted "Best Restaurant with a View" in 2021 by Eastbay Express.

Banquet tickets are currently $75 but will increase to $85 after May 25. Tickets can be purchased in front of the main office Monday through Friday from 3-4 PM as well as Tues through Thurs from 12:15-1:15.
