Traditionally, Unity Day is an Encinal event that allows the campus to come together to celebrate diversity. After a two year hiatus, students and staff looked forward to the return of and EHS tradition. However, what used to be a two day event has been trimmed down to one. The assembly/bump up ceremony will still take place out on the bleachers on Friday, May 13, but the activities/breakout rooms are canceled. The current class of 2022 was the last class to experience a complete Unity Day event.
“Unity day was canceled because it became too much for leadership," Ivan Lopez Herrera, Sophomore President, said. "We wanted it to happen and so many people in leadership were excited for it but leadership had to focus on so many things at the same time. Most of leadership thought more people were assigned to it but turned out only two people were. Next year we will make sure to make it one of our top priorities and make sure it happens."
In years past, Leadership planned breakout sessions and activities for Unity day. Leadership officers would lead an activity with the guidance of a teacher and students would get to choose breakout sessions to attend. Past sessions include: dumpling making, obstacle course, pottery, karaoke, pancake making, and poetry workshops.
“Unity day sessions were canceled as the leadership class was unorganized as we were approaching the event," leadership advisor Mr. Gorham said. "Therefore, we canceled and decided to just do an assembly. I feel good about canceling as I don’t like things that are unorganized. I'm happy that we poured our time and effort into the assembly which I’m hopeful will be a good event!”
Clubs were also encouraged to lead activities. Encinal Chinese club (ECC), was supposed to lead a wontons/dumpling making breakout room.
“Unity Day would’ve been a fun day where students would be able to take a break and have a fun time with their peers," Co-Publicist Sean Phu said. "The Chinese club’s wonton making would relieve stress and teach students about the delicate art of making wontons. Our club is glad to be a part of unity day, we just wish it was better planned out so that it could be an overall joyful experience with a large variety of activities for all students and staff members.”
Clubs can still fundraise during lunch on Friday.
“I'm glad that Unity Day is not completely canceled and we can at least do some fundraisers,” added Chinese Club secretary Aaron Chen.
Students will still be able to see a diversity of talents during the assembly.
“During the assembly tomorrow, we’re gonna have acts that will be performed by a few students. Some are gonna sing, dance, and tell jokes," said Junior VP Athena Herrera. "We’re also gonna have a rap battle and we have a [live] band performing as well.”
