The Encinal Jets (4-1) defeated the Berkeley Yellowjackets (2-3) by a score of 32-22 on Oct.1. Encinal's defense forced 9 turnovers in a messy game that had 13 total turnovers between the two teams. The Jets totaled 8 interceptions with junior Kenneth Lorenzo leading the pack with 4 interceptions in the game. Senior Kameron Cole had a fumble returned touchdown in the late fourth quarter to seal the game.

“Our defense always has the mentality to get the ball back for the offense,” said Lorenzo. "I always dedicate an hour of my day to watch film on the other team so I knew what plays they were running."

Lorenzo was named Cal-Hi Sports Northern California Defensive Player of the Week.

Junior receiver Marques Singleton had 4 receptions for 82 yards receiving and a 95-yard kickoff return touchdown which was the go-ahead score for Encinal. The TD brought Singleton's special teams touchdown total to 5 on the season. The receiver also leads the team with over 900 all-purpose yards.

“I actually want to break the record for returns,” said Singleton. “I just got to thank Kenneth and my blockers in front of me. They helped me score those.”

Senior linebacker Kameron Cole, who is second on the team in total tackles, recorded his first turnover of the season with a fumble returned touchdown late in the 4th quarter to seal the game.

“It felt amazing to celebrate a game-changing defensive TD,” said Cole. “Everyone got excited and I was happy to see everyone with a smile on their face.”

Senior quarterback Garrett Deatherage struggled this game, completing only 8 of 21 passes for 227 pass yards and 2 touchdowns with a season-worst 3 interceptions. When the passing game stalled at halftime, Encinal turned to their run game. Senior running back Frederick Tyler had 120 rushing yards on 24 carries and 2 receptions for 74 yards, including a 67 yard receiving touchdown.

The Jets are now first in the MVAL/WACC - Mission League. Encinal's offense averages 39 points per game.
