The Lodi Flames (3-1) defeated the Encinal Jets (2-1) 49-28 on Friday, September 17 at Willie Stargell Field. Lodi amassed over 500 rushing yards with its option offense. “The toughest challenge our defense had was figuring out their run option,” said senior Frederick Tyler. “They had so many [plays] and people just had a hard time sticking to our assignments.” Encinal’s defense allowed only 6.5 pts/g before facing the Flames. Lodi jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter with touchdown runs from Adam Schallberger and Kaiden Merryman. Merryman had 110 yards in the game. However, the Jets fought back, down only 21-14 at halftime. Encinal’s Garrett Deatherage threw two touchdowns to Marques Singleton in the second quarter. Singleton finished with 8 catches for 108 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a kick return touchdown. “Garrett was just throwing some good balls,” said Singleton. “Line held blocks for a good amount of time and he put the ball in a good place for me to catch it.” But Lodi’s rushing attack proved to be too much. Flames running back Richard Powell had two second half touchdown runs, including an 80-yarder in the 4th quarter to make it 42-21. Powell finished with 250 yards on the ground.

The Jets didn’t fold easy and found some success in the air. Deatherage was 14 for 22 with over 200 yards passing. “We just didn’t give up,” said Deatherage. “It was a rough [and] physical game. I’m proud of everyone for giving it their all and not giving up.” “We gotta come in next week and work our butts off,” said receiver Na'Shon Vick. “This was a wake up call.” Encinal travels to Mt. Eden (2-1) on September 24 for league play. Encinal journalists Quinton Rainey and Nathen Mendez contributed to this article.
